HORIZON EUROPE | 36-MONTH PROJECT

Turning climate data into actionable advice, for every field, every future.

ClimAurea develops climate adaptation intelligence for European agriculture, combining Earth Observation, climate modelling, and AI to support farmers, advisors, and policymakers in planning for a changing climate.

THE CHALLENGE

European agriculture is entering a period of profound transformation

Shifts in agro-climatic zones, altered precipitation patterns, and rising frequencies of extreme events are reshaping the ecological and economic conditions under which farming takes place in Europe. Recent floods in Thessaly, Greece (2023) and successive European heatwaves (2022, 2025) illustrate the limits of current resilience measures and the need for better anticipation of compound climate risks.

Agricultural planning and policy currently lack the tools to address the spatial and temporal complexity of these changes. Four gaps limit the sector’s capacity to prepare for the medium and long term:

Forecasts don't look far enough ahead

Most decision-support tools stop at seasonal forecasts. Farmers and planners need scenario-based intelligence that extends through 2100, not just next season.

Extreme weather is left out of the models

Floods, droughts, and heatwaves are intensifying, but they’re still rarely built into the resilience and planning tools farmers and advisors rely on.

What works in one region doesn't transfer to the next

Adaptation knowledge is fragmented and region-specific, so proven strategies are hard to reuse in other farming areas.

Climate data is too technical to act on

Climate and agricultural data are often too generic or too technical, so farmers and advisors struggle to put them to practical use.

OUR APPROACH

An integrated system linking climate science
to farm-level decisions

ClimAurea’s architecture is structured around three interoperable knowledge pillars that feed into a shared simulation and advisory system.

Suitability & Sustainability Mapping

Suitability & Sustainability Mapping

Long-term climatic and agro-ecological suitability for crops, grasslands, and livestock across Europe, mapped decade by decade through 2100.

Extreme Event Modelling

Extreme Event Modelling

Drought, flood, and heatwave hazards are characterised and their biophysical impacts on crops, grasslands, and livestock simulated under multiple climate scenarios.

Adaptation & Advisory

Adaptation & Advisory

Adaptation pathways are co-designed with stakeholders and delivered through a Digital Twin with a multilingual AI interface, translating outputs into context-aware guidance.

TARGET GROUPS

Developed for the stakeholders who shape agricultural adaptation

ClimAurea targets stakeholders across agriculture, climate science, digital innovation, and policy, and engages them throughout the project through workshops and co-design activities.

FARMERS & ADVISORY NETWORKS

FARMERS & ADVISORY NETWORKS

Localized adaptation guidance

Cooperatives and advisory networks are engaged through participatory workshops to co-design adaptation options relevant to their cropping systems and constraints.

POLICY & GOVERNANCE

POLICY & GOVERNANCE

Evidence for climate adaptation planning

Cooperatives and advisory networks are engaged through participatory workshops to co-design adaptation options relevant to their cropping systems and constraints.
RESEARCH & DATA ECOSYSTEM

RESEARCH & DATA ECOSYSTEM

Open, reusable infrastructure

Cooperatives and advisory networks are engaged through participatory workshops to co-design adaptation options relevant to their cropping systems and constraints.

THE CHALLENGE

Tested in real farming systems, not just simulations

West Flanders Polders

BELGIUM

Heatwaves, floods, and droughts across potato, sugar beet, and intensive livestock systems on polder and sandy-loam land.

Alentejo

PORTUGAL

Chronic drought and heat stress across cereal and Montado agroforestry systems, drawing on Europe’s largest irrigation reservoir.

Thessaly

GREECE

Compound flooding, drought, and heatwaves across the Pinios River Basin, where cotton, maize, and kiwifruit systems face rising flood and salinity risk.

Țara Călatei

ROMANIA

Drought and flood interactions across high-nature-value farmland, where mixed cereal and grazing systems rely on traditional land management.

CONSORTIUM

13 partners, 9 countries, one shared mission

Research organisations, universities, SMEs, and farmer networks working together across Europe’s agro-climatic zones.
